Although we love warm weather, beach trips and summer vacations, there is one culprit that can really damage your health during all the fun. In honor of UV Safety Month, Dr. Julie Russak, a board-certified dermatologist and melanoma expert, shares her top 5 tips for sun protection.
Seek shade between 10AM and 4PM. The sun is at its strongest during this time.
Avoid tanning and UV tanning booths, which is concentrated UV radiation.
Apply Broad Spectrum SPF 15 or more everyday, and reapply immediately after swimming or sweating.
Apply a SPF hand cream before getting a UV gel manicure and before going under a UV drier.
Wear Broad Spectrum sunscreen all year round, even when indoors, as UVA rays penetrate glass and remain constant all year round. UVA and UVB rays can harm the skin and lead to skin cancers, however, UVB is effectively blocked by glass. UVA rays are known to penetrate glass upwards of 60%, which makes wearing SPF essential for people who routinely sit next to a window at work, home or during a long commute.
Be sure to see your dermatologist annually for a complete skin cancer screening to track your moles and ensure any changes aren’t cancerous.
