June is Aphasia Awareness Month. Aphasia is a communication disorder caused by stroke, brain injury, infection, tumors or neurological conditions, and it impairs an individual’s ability to process and use language. The left side of the brain controls our ability to speak and understand language.
Approximately one million people have aphasia in the United States alone, with 85% of the cases the result of stroke, and an estimated two million expected to have aphasia by 2020. Up to one million strokes are estimated to occur within the U.S. each year, with 80,000 people diagnosed with aphasia each year. There are more than 600 support groups for stroke and aphasia in the United States. You can visit the National Aphasia Association website HERE for more information. Aggressive speech therapy has been shown to be significantly helpful to those afflicted with aphasia. Aphasia is a loss of ability, not intellect.
A stroke occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery’s flow of blood to your brain. The best way to prevent a stroke is to eat a healthy diet, avoid smoking, excess alcohol intake, and to exercise regularly. Your health and wellness matter first.
