WHAT IS ADOLESCENT IDIOPATHIC SCOLIOSIS?
An abnormal side-to-side curvature of the spine that appears late in childhood or in adolescence and is characterized by an elongated “S” or “C” shape in addition to twisted or rotated bones is adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). It affects as many as 4 in 10 adolescents.
SYMPTOMS & DIAGNOSIS
It is thought that hormonal imbalances, asymmetric growth and muscle imbalance can cause this spinal curvature, and although “idiopathic” means no identifiable causes, approximately 30% of AIS patients have a family history of scoliosis. Symptoms include a prominence on the back or rib hump secondary to the rotational aspect of the scoliosis, shoulder height asymmetry, or a torso lean resulting in a waistline asymmetry. AIS can be diagnosed via a postural screening, spine exam, X-rays and MRI. Treatment often involves a scoliosis brace, which can halt or slow the progression of the curve and help a patient avoid a spinal fusion surgery and the limitation and complications that accompany it.
HOW DASHA® CAN HELP
At times AIS can develop in young athletes who don’t yet have strong abdominals and a strong spine to support their physical feats. DASHA’s “independent client providers” such as chiropractors and physical therapists can work together to develop a comprehensive treatment plan with your child’s primary care physician. Depending on the assessment and the development of the child’s spine it may be suggested to wear a scoliosis brace, which helps patients strengthen their core and exercises that move in alignment towards leading a long, pain-free life.
