Another addiction

Kick the coffee, on to the gum? It’s easy to get addicted to gum, especially when you’re someone who hates having lingering tastes in your mouth. Popping a piece in your mouth after your morning coffee, lunch and in the afternoon to hold you over instead of grabbing a snack are all things that most people do. Is chewing gum good or bad for your lifestyle?

What people don’t know is that there are some negative effects of chewing gum, even though it seems to have no problems on the surface. We’re here to lay out both the pros and cons of chewing gum, this way, when you’re reaching for your next piece, you can decide if it’s worth it.

Pro: Chewing gum alleviates bad breath. No matter the flavor you grab, gum can give the mouth a refresh and reset.

Pro: Chewing gum can relieve heartburn. Chewing creates extra saliva, and can help to balance out stomach acid.

Pro: Chewing gum can curb your appetite. Many studies have showed that people who chew gum show less signs of hunger and sugar cravings!

Pro: Some people chew gum on a run because it feels good to them. They may feel like that extra motion of the jaw helps to create a rhythm that drives their motivation and enhances their workout session.

Con: Many brands of gum include the ingredient aspartame, which is an artificial sweetener that can lead to headaches.

Con: Chewing gum can pull out and/or damage dental work like crowns, bridges and fillings.

Con: in extreme cases of gum chewing, people can be diagnosed with TMJ, which is due to overusing the muscles in the gums and jaw.

Con: Chewing gum can make you look rude, unrefined and a definite NO NO for the office.

Our suggestion, if you’re a gum addict, stick to sugar free options and try chewing one less piece a day. Every little change can help!
