Today’s Sha-nan-igans So today I set out to do my long run! That means no distraction, a great night sleep and of course, a positive attitude! The day started off well then this happened. I got a nasty cramp! Just as my running HIGH kicked in, I got a side stitch. My whole right side felt as though it was being pushed on by a heavy weight.
Damn Side Stitch!
Running with stomach cramps is never fun, but there are ways to work through the pain. First things first, STOP questioning yourself. In the heat of the moment when you are in pain for some odd reason we just start questioning. How do you work through the pain?
- Did I breathe irregularly?
- Was my breakfast too big?
- Could it be poor blood supply in the diaphragm posture problems, starting off too quickly, weak abdominal muscles, a full stomach or the wrong running style can provoke a side stitch?
Oy Vey, I sound like my mother! It’s time I slow down!
Bottom Line, A side stitch is harmless, but it sure as hell can be painful. Often times it forces you to quit a race in the middle. I’m not a believer in killing your body. If it hurts, stop briefly, take a rest, and hop back on board. You Got This!
Question: Have you ever gotten a Side Stitch in the middle of a run?
