Please consider this blog post your reminder that Father’s Day is now less than one week away! Eeep! That’s right. Father’s Day is on Sunday, June 16th this year, and before I relay the scoop on what the kids and I are planning to do to celebrate, I must tell my husband Darren not to read this blog post. So Darren, if you’re reading this, to borrow the words of my 4th grade teacher, please “find something else meaningful to do” that will not involve spoiling your surprise!
We know that holidays like Father’s Day are used to fuel marketing campaigns everywhere, as they attempt to reel us in to purchase that “perfect gift” for Dad. But in our family, we stick to making the day all about the particular uniqueness of my husband and the father of my two children.
What do I mean by particular uniqueness? Simply that we focus on doing the things that will bring him pleasure, and selecting small gifts chosen by the kids just for him. This coming Sunday we will be out East in the Hamptons, and first and foremost, we will let Darren get a run in in the morning. Running a business and juggling the busy schedules of our kids, we don’t always get all the time for exercise that we want and need, but we will definitely make it a special point that Darren gets to do one of his all-time favorite things this Sunday, morning – run! I know when I find time to get a run in I sometimes find myself talking to the ducks to sort out the thoughts that run a million miles an hour in my brain, and no telling what Darren does when he gets to steal some quality down time for himself. That’s between him…and his running shoes.
My daughter Summer made her father a bejeweled mirror at the art store (I’m pretty sure this mirror is more for her than him, but it’s the thought that counts), and my son Cooper also helped us to choose a Gangnam Style Psy tuxedo shirt, since Darren loves to demonstrate his dancing skills to Psy’s Youtube sensation in the comfort of our family room. I’m pretty sure you won’t see Darren busting a move in his t-shirt at the office or out and about, but it will certainly provide us plenty of laughs at home. We also made a photo album for Darren, which I’m hoping to add in some goofy pictures of the kids before we wrap it.
For lunch on Sunday, we will probably give Darren his favorite chicken salad from Quogue Country Market, and perhaps some cheese from The Village Gourmet Cheese Shoppe in Southampton. (My mouth is watering as I write this!). Then he’ll probably take Cooper to the batting range, while I go miniature golfing with Summer.
If Darren’s father is available, he’ll probably join us for some of our adventures, and I know I will be paying a special silent tribute to the man who raised me, who has long since passed. I still think about him every day.
As you can see, we won’t be spending tons and tons of money or buying a button down shirt, a tie, or anything golf-related; we’re just focused on having a good time and celebrating the man who brings great joy to me and our two children, each and every day. So custom-tailor the Father’s Day experience for your dad or your husband; if the thought comes from a well-meaning place, you can’t go wrong!
