Let’s flush it out: My experience with a juice cleanse and colonic hydrotherapy

Someone in my office was talking about trying a juice cleanse, and after listening to her I thought, “Hmmmm, we are halfway through summer, and I have had my share of cocktails, bbq’s, and sweets. Why not? I am feeling a little bloated and could use a cleanse for sure!” After doing a little research, my hubbie Dr. Pollack, DASHA®’s Stephanie Gates, and I decided to try the 3 day cleanse from Cooler Cleanse.

My goals for the cleanse were to feel refreshed, healthier, and to jump start my new workout regimen which will include more running. Although I had done the 3 day cleanse from Blueprint Cleanse a few years ago, I was excited to have another go at it. The day before the cleanse, I had a salad with tomatoes, carrots, and avocado and otherwise ate fairly normally (we didn’t follow the recommended day before instructions from Cooler Cleanse’s website too carefully).

Our juices were delivered to our apartment the next morning, and before drinking the first, I decided to jump start my cleanse with my first colonic irrigation. Many cleanse websites recommended colonics to go along with the cleanse, so I decided to go for it! I started doing research and found a place on 21st Street in NYC called FLUID Water Therapy, which utilizes a unique and surprisingly pretty piece of equipment called the “Angel of Water” for colonic irrigation (pictured above). I called and spoke with a woman (who happened to be the owner) at this upscale colon hydrotherapy center and booked an appointment. I was actually a bit apprehensive to try it…

However, my reaction at the end of the session was, “Oh my! Oh my! My new favorite experience!” I realized early on in the appointment how amazing the system was. In less than 40 minutes I was completely flushed out. I actually watched my belly get flatter. It was great. And that’s all I need to say about my first colonic irrigation.

That being said, my experience with the Cooler Cleanse was rather short-lived. Basically it consists of 6 juices spread throughout the day (see Stephanie’s post for a more detailed description of it), and looking back, I think it was a mistake to try my first colonic irrigation on the same day that I started the juices. My energy level was depleted from the get-go. Although I felt full throughout the day, by 5:30 I started to get hungry and felt the need to taste something more flavorful than juice. By 7:00 I had a huge migraine and was practically begging my husband to bail on the juice cleanse with me. Like a good guy he did!

I can’t forget to mention that Stephanie was thriving with her juicing experience, especially after the first day, which was rough for her as well. The first day we found ourselves texting back and forth throughout to get status reports.

I am proud of her accomplishment and would love to have a do over sometime soon. The next time, however, I will do my colonic irrigation afterwards!

I’d love to hear from you on your experiences with juicing and colonic irrigation!

Stay happy and healthy,
Sha
