This week (May 14th – 20th) is National Women’s Health Week! To help celebrate, I interviewed some of my favorite, most badass, brilliant, female minds in the health and wellness industry to feature
One of my favorites is Jackie Fazzalari, LAc an acupuncturist and “independent client provider” at DASHA. She is a great human being who truly has the ability to heal people with her hands.
Jackie has personally treated me for migraines and helped to rebalance my hormones through the use of holistic medicine. She is an exceptional holistic healthcare doctor and takes the time to understand her patients’ conditions.
Jackie was a biology major at Brooklyn College where she focused on homeopathic medicine. She then received her Master of Science in Oriental Medicine from the Tri-State College of Acupuncture. She loves her 15-year-old daughter and enjoys travelling, art, reading and wine (honestly, who doesn’t!).
Shannon: How did you get started in the industry?
Jackie: I’ve always been intrigued by energy-based healing medicine. My maternal grandmother was a shaman and she had the ability to heal people naturally. This was something that always resonated with me. Even though I went to school for biology, I knew it wasn’t the right fit. Everything was too cold and remote. I landed on acupuncture after seeing incredible results from a friend who was in a car accident. The improvements were astounding, both physical and emotional!
How long have you been working in the health industry?
It’s coming up on 11 years!
What does it mean to be a woman in health and wellness?
Being a woman is the heart of my focus. I’m able to draw from my own personal experiences and I know what it’s like to be diagnosed. Women are often offered very little options. We’re often told to just cope with our feelings or are thrown some pill which could complicate and compromise personal well-being, especially if the woman is trying to get pregnant. Oriental medicine offers natural options to treat and prevent. Nothing about health is “one size fits all”.
What is something people may not think acupuncture can help with?
Acupuncture can actually help individuals quit smoking and aid weight loss. It helps detoxify the body by easing some of the physical and mental withdrawal a person feels when they’re addicted. For weight loss, acupuncture can speed up those sluggish metabolisms and even curb appetites for people seeking solace in food.
What about health is SEXY to you?
When a person feels healthy that radiates from their body. They smile easier, they look less stressed. Their inner-calmness is felt and seen.
How do you feel empowered in your line of work?
I feel empowered when I see my patients’ concerns taken care of – hands down! You see it in their faces, they’re pain free, they’re no longer dependent on medication for anxiety or sleep. They’re no longer bound to the pain.
