High intensity interval training (HIIT) is the hottest fitness trend right now. If you’re not familiar, HIIT is basically any workout that alternates between intense bursts of activity and fixed periods of less intense activity or rest. The objective is to shock your system, build your stamina, and get your heart rate up.
There are so many benefits to performing this type of exercise.
Researchers at the University of Scotland recently found that six-second bursts of HIIT done ten times with a rest period of one minute in between yielded enormous health benefits, including reducing blood pressure and increasing the flow of oxygen to your muscles, helping to combat the risk of several diseases brought on by sedentary behavior, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
And that’s not all! Below, we round up all the reasons to hop on the HIIT train.
You can do it anywhere. Any time, any place is good for HIIT. No gym, court, field, track or classroom is required. HIIT workouts are tailor-made, just like your DASHA® experience, which means you’ll never get bored.
It’s fiscally friendly. Much of the focus is on plyometric exercises that use your body weight as a tool, so you don’t need any fancy equipment to complete a session.
It’s efficient. Even if you just have time for a 15-minute workout, you can reap major benefits. A 2011 study by the American College of Sports Medicine found that just two weeks of HIIT improves your aerobic capacity as much as six to eight weeks of endurance training.
It’s heart-healthy. HIIT workouts push you to the limits and into the anaerobic zone (the place where you feel you can’t breathe and your heart will fall out of your chest). This strengthens your heart and prepares it for any other physical exertion it may experience.
It leads to weight loss. Because HIIT workouts mix in cardio, you can lose weight in your fat stores without sacrificing muscle. In fact, you recruit more muscle fibers to help you accomplish your physical feats.
It burns fat. Because your body’s repair cycle kicks into high gear after a HIIT session, you can actually burn more fat and calories in the 24 hours after you compete a HIT workout than you do after a one-hour run, for example.
It boosts your metabolism. HIIT stimulates production of your human growth hormone (HGH) in the 24 hours after your workout. HGH increases your calorie burn and keeps you looking young.
It challenges you. HIIT workouts are tough. But you’ll see and feel the results and know you’ve accomplished something great!
