Food is always an interesting conversation especially when it comes to DASHA®s Founder Shannon Russo-Pollack.
Food is both a necessary and pleasurable sensory activity, eating is something that happens every day, with a great percentage of our time revolving around selecting what to eat, preparing what to eat, or shopping for what we eat. But that never stops her from grabbing a quick bite and sharing her own thoughts on food!
When I first started to build the DASHA® brand in 2008, I remember thinking how challenging it would be to get the message of preventative healthcare out to the New York Community. Rather than dictate to people on do’s and dont’s, I felt it was more inviting to be relatable. And from their, the DASHA® energy just evolved…
“I am NOT a nutritionist or dietitian. My job is simply educate you and connect you with the best resources possible!”
I am surrounded by healthcare providers who each have their own unique style on how they educate the patient/client. I believe “Aside from having good bedside manner and high experience, a provider should give off positive vibes.”
Almost immediatley I realized that you didn’t necessarily need to be the doctor to make a big impact in someones life or educate them. Everyone needs a coach! And imagine a coach that teaches you how to build a lifestyle and achieve total body wellness?!
DASHA®: What is your favorite food?
SHANNON: These days Id have to say a steak on the grill with lots of garlic and herbs! I am also a huge veggies gal, so that is my number one side versus fries.
DASHA®: What is your favorite snack?
SHANNON: Is there an “all of the above” option? Because I think that’s what I need….I can’t choose just one! A green apple with cinnamon & sugar, A homemade trail mix, dried mango , oatmeal cookie, or Justin’s Peanut Butter Cup (dark chocolate, of course)!
DASHA®: What is your favorite dessert?
SHANNON: A little bit of Nutella with a whole lot of berries and bananas. I love mixing the two sweets together. It’s kinda like a healthy sweet , if you will.
DASHA®: Do you have a food that is a “guilty pleasure”?
SHANNON: I really want to check off “all of the above.” Whatever the choices are, all of the above! But I will admit I have a slight addiction to Starbucks Macha Green Tea Latte topped with cinnamon!
DASHA®: How would you describe your relationship with food?
SHANNON: Hmmm. That depends on my mood, the setting, how it’s presented or delivered. I eat for energy, strength and survival!
DASHA®: For clients who are looking to lose weight, how do you help them develop a plan to meet their wellness goals?
SHANNON: We recognize that everyone has a different journey. Some might take longer than others so web need to set milestones and goals! We work on developing a physical regimen with them that will meet both their personal needs and interests.
DASHA®: The dieting industry is a multi-billion dollar industry in the US, and the obesity epidemic is on the ride. How does someone determine what is the best food to eat for a diet?
SHANNON: Checking your blood and vitamin levels, along with sharing some honest information about your eating habits is a great way to start a healthy plan.
DASHA®: Your diet contributes not only to how you look, but also to how you feel. How do you choose foods that are delicious and make you feel good?
SHANNON: I always ask myself if the payoff for the gratification of eating that bad thing will be worth it. Will it be worth it to feel bloated from gluten the next day? NOT!
DASHA®: What is your favorite summer barbecue food?
SHANNON: Lobster, shrimp, sweet potato, carrots, mushrooms, onions and/or asparagus with fresh garlic on the grill!
DASHA®: Do you have any sacred rules about food or mealtime in your house?
SHANNON: No eating food on the couch unless its movie night! Plates must be colorful, even if it means adding fruit to the dinner. I am very firm in sitting up straight, standing tall to begin with, and NO SLOUCHING!
