Julie Spitzer

Please share a little bit of your background with the DASHA® community.  My name is Julie Spitzer.  I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and a Licensed Psychoanalyst in private practice in Columbus Circle.  I work with both individuals and groups, and I work with athletes, artists, and working professionals.

Where do you live?  I live on the Upper West Side with my family and Lhasa Apso, Claudette, named after the most regal of movie icons, Claudette Colbert.  (She played Cleopatra in DeMille’s 1930s epic.)

How do you commute to work?  I commute to work via the subway, walking, bike or taxi, depending on the time of year and weather.

What are your hobbies?  I have a very active lifestyle, which helps me to compensate for the occupational hazard of sitting in a recliner all day; and also I am an avid and lifelong athlete.  Tennis is my absolute favorite sport!  Biking and walking are musts as well, and a stationery recumbent bike parked in my living room got me through our gruesome winter.

How did you first learn about DASHA®?  I first learned about DASHA® through my friend Trish who works one block away from their Flagship location.  She raved about the care and multiplicity of services.

How did DASHA® help you?  While competing in a tennis match last January, I injured my left knee. That’s when Trish advised that I go to DASHA® for diagnosis and treatment.  Dr. Pollack and his team took care of all my needs. He examined me, did a sonogram on site, and then referred me out for an MRI.  The verdict was complex meniscus tears and ACL deterioration, along with my usual absence of cartilage (as in osteoarthritis).  Dr. Pollack wasted no time moving on all fronts to bring everything to bear on my recovery.  In my case, this involved ultrasound, stimulation, massage, orthotics and more!

Everyone on the DASHA® team is a good listener and the billing department handles all insurance matters expertly.  For example, when I was ready to try tennis again, Dr. Pollack was open to my ideas about a knee brace.  He understood what I needed, and ordered the perfect brace for me the same day — with no out of pocket cost.  For anyone who has been exasperated by insurance company shenanigans, this support is priceless.

Define what DASHA® means to you.  To me, DASHA® means commitment to wellness, not only for acute pain and debilitation, but also for ongoing work to strengthen and improve my overall well-being.  I have made good use of physical therapy, massage, acupuncture.  I have done Pilates with Georgette since April of 2011. Rob, an excellent physical therapist, worked with me in the initial weeks after my injury, which got me through the worst of it.   The whole team is great and coordinated by Marina, who gives an excellent massage!
