Everything You Need to Know About Spinning

For those of you who participated in the DASHA® designed pop-up workout for Week Six of the Summer Wellness Challenge, we hope you had a great time burning calories and getting in the fitness habit!  SoulCycle contributed to our gift bag for the Summer Wellness Challenge participants.  SoulCycle re-invents indoor cycling with a cardio workout, hand weights, choreography and music to transform the way you look and feel.  You’ve probably heard the buzzword “spinning” at some point and want to know, just what exactly is it?  To learn more, DASHA® spoke with Gabby Cohen, Vice-President of Public Relations for SoulCycle.

DASHA®:  We hear about spin class all the time.  What is SoulCycle and what is spinning?

GABBY:  SoulCycle is a 45-minute full body workout, quite different from your traditional spinning class (which is a trademarked exercise-bike program).  Held in candlelit studios and set to one-of-a-kind playlists, SoulCycle is truly a cardio party on a bike.  We ride to the beat of the music, focusing on rhythm and the energy of the “pack”, which creates a strong bond between riders.  Our instructors act as motivational coaches, pushing riders both mentally and physically.

DASHA®:  What areas of the body/muscles does SoulCycle work?

GABBY:  SoulCycle is a full body workout – be prepared to work everything from head to toe!  The bikes are designed to allow riders access to the underused posterior muscles, like glutes and hamstrings, instead of relying just on quads.  The core is engaged throughout the entire ride to improve strength and stability and the upper body is targeted through the use of hand weights and choreography.

DASHA®:  What type of workout gear do you need to take a SoulCycle class?

GABBY:  SoulCycle does require special shoes that clip into our bikes – but not to worry!  We provide them at all of our studios, along with water, towels and padded seat covers.

DASHA®:  What type of fitness results can someone see if he/she commits to SoulCycle class?

GABBY:  We recommend three classes a week to see results.  Expect toned arms, a defined core, and leaner legs.  Not to mention some major mental changes!  Every day we hear from riders who have had their “aha” moment on the bike.
