WHAT IS ILIOTIBIAL BAND SYNDROME (ITBS)?
The ligament that runs down the outside of your thigh from your hip to your shin is called the iliotibial band. It attaches to the knee and helps to stabilize and move your joint. Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) occurs when this ligament becomes tight or inflamed.
SYMPTOMS & DIAGNOSIS
Pain in ITBS emanates specifically from the side of the knee, at the bump of the bone called the lateral epicondyle. Pain usually comes when walking, running or using stairs. Many long distance runners, tennis players and cyclists can develop ITBS. A physical therapist can diagnose ITBS by testing your movements, flexibility, strength, and balance. If it is an endurance sport that has led to your inflammation, your physical therapist may also ask you questions about your workout gear and ask you to demonstrate your form.
HOW DASHA® CAN HELP
Surgery is not needed to treat ITBS. A physical therapist can develop a treatment program that will focus on increasing your range of motion, muscle strength, manual therapy and functional training. ITBS can also cause other muscles to weaken or be used incorrectly as you try to compensate for pain, so a physical therapist will look at how all of your muscles are working together and get you back on track to a pain-free life.
