Do you spend too much time buried in your cell phone, basked in the glow of the warm blue light? It’s not good for your posture, productivity, communication or relationship skills and if you’ve got kids, the example you’re setting is even worse and at their detriment of their own health and social development skills. Here are some suggestions on how to put an end to your cell phone ruling your life:
Invest in a good old-fashioned alarm clock. You don’t need to reach for your phone and check your Facebook or inbox first thing in the morning. There are some experts who say we are defined by the first thing we do or reach for – why should that be your cell phone? No one dies and says, “Gosh, I wish I had spent more time looking at my phone.” Put your phone on airplane mode or silence in another part of your apartment or house and wake up to a good 20th century alarm clock. Enjoy the peace while you can – you’ll get around to your day soon enough.
Set an end time for technology each day. If you have a family, you may want to consider putting the phone away from the time you come home until the kid’s bedtime, or powering down and putting the phone away up to two hours before your bedtime. We didn’t always used to be so readily available. It may be hard to believe, but the world can survive without you for a few hours, and more importantly, you may find yourself in the moment of your life more – enjoying your spouse, kids, or whatever evening activity you’re engaging in…even more.
There’s an app for that cell phone addiction. There are various apps you can install on your phone that will do things like shut off your access to your social media during certain hours. And isn’t that a good thing? To just go ahead and be in your actual life, rather than feeling the need to chronicle every moment with a picture or comment? Won’t it be nice to look at your friend or family member or colleague’s face, actually talk to them and hear them better? It’s like riding a bike. Try it and see if your muscle memory of how to have a relationship without a cell phone kicks in.
Keep devices out of reach during meals and while driving. When it comes to chowing down, put the phone away and out of reach. It’s rude and distracting to whomever you’re dining with to place your phone on the table. And when it comes to driving, why do you need to be on the phone? Your eyes should be on the road. No phone call or text or status update is that important. Ever.
