Sometimes I ask myself, “Who’s the crazy one now, me or him?” When we met he was perfectly fit. His favorite hobbies were biking, working out at the gym, and snowboarding.
Then my best friend Blake said to him, “You know, you would be a great runner.” It was as though G-d had spoken (I say this with love). He made a commitment to his running like the one he made to our marriage. 10 years later the man I married has developed a crazy addiction to running. I can’t explain what happens with runners, but if you know one, you know them all. Running becomes a part of their soul.
With over a dozen marathons and 50 half-marathons completed, my husband is still tremendously passionate about his second love (his running). He is tremendously sad that work is taking him out of town for the upcoming Hamptons Marathon on Saturday, September 28th, but he wouldn’t miss the 2013 NYC Marathon for all the world. It took me a while to understand and accept the crazy behavior of the endorphins, but after some time I decided that rather than being a “running hater,” I would join him. I wanted to see what this obsession was all about.
I can’t say that I am a marathon runner just yet, but I have developed a strange love of running half-marathons. I really see why people everywhere love to run — it is such a release, it clears your brain, it brings you sanity. It is now officially a part of my “ME” time.
Plus, the fact that I can justify new sneakers quite often helps feed with my shoe addiction. 😉
Happy Marathon Training!
