Last night I attended the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence 31st Annual Adele C. Smithers Angel Ball in Garden City, New York. If you’re not familiar with this amazing gala, you need to be ASAP!
Over the past few weeks, I have shared a lot of personal details on this site and on social media about how I’ve been affected by addiction. In 1996, I lost my handsome, always smiling, super cool older brother Sean due to the disease. The LICADD has long been important to my family and me.
At the gala, I sat with my mother whom I am so proud of for attending, as I know the evening wasn’t easy for her. The true gift of the night was seeing Sean’s old buddies. One is now the director of the LICADD and another has recently produced a powerful PSA called “Hey Charlie” that shows how easily the use of substances like alcohol and drugs can spiral into addiction.
Check out the three-minute video here! (Note: Children should not watch this unattended)
I’m excited to announce that this summer, I’ll be partnering with the LICADD to help spread the word about addiction and to break the stigma surrounding the disease. Stay tuned!
