While the rest of the world sleeps, a select few of us are rising. I’m the type of girl that wakes up in the morning and jumps right out of bed. I love the fact that by 9:30AM I have already cleared out my inbox, got my kids out and ready for school, worked-out, and ate my breakfast (usually oatmeal) …all before my workday has even begun.
As the “Boss Lady,” I wake up in the morning with this crazy feeling of, “I’ve got to get SH** done!” There’s no such thing as hitting the snooze button or procrastination for me. I know I have emails to answer and business to make happen. My day starts running at 6:20AM. I do my mom thing- get my kids ready for school and make sure they have a solid breakfast before school (it is the most important meal of the day). Once my kids are out, I’ve built a small window of “ME Time” to get my fitness on and make sure my mind is set and focused for the rest of my day.
I wasn’t always like this. So I bet you’re wondering, how did this change come about? Well, I finally reached the point where my excuses were stopping me from having my own success. I was always the one running late and causing others to wait around for me. It was selfish. Why should I expect my friends to wait for me to finish applying my makeup or even worse, blowing out my hair? Being late is a non-verbal way of saying, “my time is more valuable than yours.” Being “the boss,” you can’t set that precedent for your employees. It starts this vicious cycle where consistently running 5 minutes late, makes it “ok” for everyone to start showing up late. For instance if people show up late and see the meeting hasn’t even started, it gives them justification that showing up on time would have been the incorrect start time. It wasn’t until I took a step back from my personal life and noticed it was time to make changes and those changes needed to start with ME. I learned my lesson and now realize that sometimes the ship sails on without you.
“It was time to reinvent Me!”
So what motivates me? Well, it’s simple. I’m motivated by the opportunities that surround me. I am around so many amazing people. I work with the top professionals in the health and wellness field. For years I was in the backseat. I watched the constant advancing of new products, technologies and services explode. But I was a sponge. I took it all in. I never stopped learning. I never stopped hustling. As “the girl behind the white drapes,” I was tired of sharing my ideas and watching others knock it out of the box. Everyone around me was advancing and although I was still outputting creatively, I wasn’t feeling fulfilled.
It took a while to build back my confidence (and a lot of self-help books). I needed to look at myself in the mirror and make the adjustments that needed to happen. Once I learned how to manage my time better, I realized how much more in control I was of my own life, career and most importantly my own happiness. The girl who I once knew was still inside. I just needed to start waking her up at the crack of dawn.
