Fifty percent of the patients I see at DASHA have herniated discs. A herniated disc is a tear in the outer, fibrous ring of your intervertebral disc that then allows the soft, inner portion to bulge through beyond the outer part. Ouch! If you’ve ever had one that is symptomatic, you know just how painful they are. Herniated discs are often the by-product of an accident, injury, or even athletic training. When the sciatic nerve is compressed, pain can radiate from your lower back, all the way down your leg. Things you take for granted — standing up, sitting down, walking – these basic activities suddenly become excruciatingly painful. The pain can sometimes escalate further in the colder months.
Cortizone shots, epidurals, mainstream chiropractic work or physical therapy alone, while they may provide some relief, are not enough to treat sciatica permanently. At DASHA, we do several diagnostic tests to determine first that the compression of your sciatic nerve is causing your pain – we do this via a combination nerve tests, ultrasounds, and a MRI in some patient cases. And then, for patients who are generally healthy and vital, we recommend spinal decompression therapy, which has an 89% permanent success rate, especially when used in conjunction with chiropractic work. The traction involved in a commitment to spinal decompression therapy 2-3 times/week for 2-4/months will help get your disc back into place so it doesn’t press down on the nerve, where it will then regenerate, and eliminate your pain. This is a small investment of time to avoid pain and worse, surgery.
Many patients accept their sciatica as a way of life, but you don’t have to. Consider calling DASHA today to help diagnose and treat your sciatica, so you can take care of your wellness and enjoy the new year we are about to swing into, pain-free.
