Six Ways to Lessen the Madness of Life

Life is tough and short, so make the most of it! New York City is a busy place – we’ve all got places to go, things to do, deals to make, and somewhere or something we had to do five minutes ago. So how can you quiet all the noise and just have MORE in life – more time, more fun, more productivity? Follow these steps to lessen the madness of life.

Stop responding to every single email and text right away, especially after business hours and on weekends. It wasn’t so long ago that we weren’t available all the time. Life will continue and the sun will still rise if you don’t answer that work e-mail or non-urgent text message right away. You teach people how to respect you and your time. Be present in your life and the people you are sharing it with and put the technology away for a while. Your body, brains, spirit and relationships will thank you.

Do the hardest thing first. Don’t let that project, whether it’s personal or business, wait until later in the day to tackle – then it becomes the can you keep kicking down the road. Spend time on the undesirable or hardest project that requires the most brain power first thing – then it will get done and you can turn your attention to the easier items.

Move more. Sitting is the new smoking. You should be moving every day, even if you don’t get to the gym. The physical and mental health benefits of movement have the potential to add more quality time to your life than staying glued to your computer to work that extra hour. Breathe, circulate the oxygen in your body, better yet – ask a friend, husband, girlfriend, or other ideal companion to join you for that walk, that class or that workout!

Purge what you don’t need. Don’t let the clutter in your home or office clutter your life. Purge what you’re not using – donate it, shred it, or give it away. Life is hectic enough, you don’t need to add more stuff to life.

Host a get together. Feeling guilty because there are too many friends you haven’t seen in too long? Why not invite them all over for dinner or drinks or a game night and you know, entertain – what they used to do in the olden days. You don’t have to cook – you can order take out! Time is precious – enjoy and celebrate the great friends in your life.

Practice self-care and step outside your boundaries to do something new for yourself. Maybe it’s a massage, maybe it’s Saturday morning bike rides, maybe it’s a special class or weekend getaway with your best friends from college – whatever it is, you’re an adult or maybe you’re a parent with a lot of responsibilities, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun and make time to unwind, too.
