Some of My Favorite Things: January

The beginning of January left New York City with polar temperatures and a snow day, and Dr. Pollack, the kids and I stuck in Puerto Rico 6 days longer than we originally planned!  Our original flight back to Manhattan was cancelled due to Hercules, and we couldn’t get home until Thursday, 4 days into the kids’ return to school and 4 days into client appointments and plans for the DASHA® Grand Central location. We are so grateful to (finally!) be back at DASHA® this month, doing what we love each and every day.  In the spirit of our theme of the month, “Re-invent,” I’m talking about a few of my favorite things for January!

FASHION – It’s winter!  It’s all about staying warm and still looking good.  I’m a big fan of the infinity scarf (those scarves that are in a circle and have no beginning or end) – they are elegant and hip – you can leave them on with your jacket or even once you get indoors, and they can also offer a great splash of color around your face!  (Not to mention they also look like the DASHA® logo!  Hint: You can see the infinity sign woven through the letters of our name.)

FOOD – For me, cooking is about striking the right balance of

healthy and delicious food that doesn’t take a long time to make.  I want to make sure my family is eating well, but between running around with the kids and DASHA®, I don’t have a lot of time to prepare dinner.  Rice is the big go-to carbohydrate in our family.  Rather than serve giant pasta meals (which can leave you feeling bloated or sluggish, in a food coma, and aren’t good if you want to lose weight) or bread, we serve rice, which has no gluten, and also contains Vitamin B, D, calcium, fiber, iron and other essential minerals.  Rice is heart healthy, with zero bad cholesterol, and again, it’s a carbohydrate, which we do need for energy.  I’m a big fan of the Near East and Goya brands.  There are also tons of yummy seasonings and flavors and different types of rice out there – there is definitely something for everyone!

BEAUTY – I’m a woman, so I’m always in search of a lipstick that meets the trifecta criteria to be labeled perfect: it has to not dry my lips out, last long, and make them appear fuller.  Tarte Glamazon Pure Performance 12-hour lipstick does all of the above!  It has emollient-rich mango, avocado and shea butters, but it is also infused with Amazonian clay that restores natural moisture to the lips while also nourishing and hydrating! It doesn’t feather or fade, or stick to your hair.  Tarte cosmetics are sold at Sephora locations.

CULTURE – Earlier this month we did a blog post on Star Kidz, the awesome after-school program in NYC and Westchester for kids ages 3 to 17 that combines singing, acting and dancing!  Click HERE to read the full article.  Exposing children to the arts is so important and instills them with appreciation for beauty and important life skills in confidence-building and thinking creatively.  I included a picture of the beautiful musical instruments they make in Puerto Rico that we shared with our kids on our holiday trip.

SELF – I’m taking DASHA®’s advice and using the New Year as an opportunity to re-invent myself in the areas I want to improve in.  For me, this means managing my schedule even better so I can give the most and my best to growing DASHA® and my growing kids!  I’m finished with holiday eating and getting back into a running training program in time for the More Magazine/Fitness Magazine Women’s Half-Marathon in April.  DASHA® would love to help you in your own re-invention goals.  Have you considered purchasing pilates sessions?  They’re gentle and critical to core and strength building.  You will start to feel the difference right away.  Contact our concierge and ask about the promotional deal we’re running.  No time like the present to re-invent!
