Studio Spotlight: SLT
Workout Type: Pilates
Locations: Flatiron, Midtown, SoHo, Upper East Side, Upper West Side
Cost: $20 for your first class; $40 for each class after that
What To Expect: SLT is a 50-minute cardio-meets-strength-training pilates class that makes use of the Megaformer to add tension for a full body exercise. Be prepared to move around the machine fairly quickly (hence the cardio component, but no, it’s not like running) doing compound moves that work multiple muscle groups to the point of no return. You will leave extremely sore in places you didn’t know existed and with an understanding of how the extreme reformer machine works.
First-time tip: Be sure to grab a machine next to the most experienced-looking person in the room. Transitions between moves happen quickly so you’ll want to have someone nearby to help make sure you are staying on course. Instructors aren’t as hands-on with adjustments here, so it can be easy to get lost in the confusion. I didn’t break much of a sweat, but with every position we did, my muscles were definitely shaking. My arms, legs and especially my core were working for the full 45 minutes!
Those who do this “pilates on crack” class regularly can expect to reduce body fat and increase muscle definition without bulking up. With nine studios in the New York area and more in the works, it’s no wonder that SLT has quickly become one of the city’s favorite workout addictions.
