The Truth About Flip Flops

It’s summer, the season of flip flops. They’re easy, they’re breezy, they come in all colors, styles and prices. They say, “I just tossed this look together,” like a poster child for chic. But the sad news is, they’re really bad for your feet. Over 25,000 visits to the ER each year are due to flip flop injuries.

At DASHA®, where we’re in the wellness business, we’d like to see less of you because you’re in such great health and busy leading your pain-free life. Your feet have a very demanding job getting you everywhere you need to go and supporting your body weight day after day. And when you don’t wear good shoes to help your feet do their job, we see a lot of your feet. Here are all the reasons you should never wear flip flops:

They lack all the necessary, good stuff. Flip flops don’t offer your feet arch support, shock absorption or heel cushioning, all things you need to keep your feet in shape and to stand tall and walk with your body in alignment. Chronic flip flop wearers can alter the way they stand or walk permanently, and not for the better.

Frequent flip flop wearing can lead to bigger health problems. People who wear flip flops are more likely to trip, especially in urban environments that naturally demand inhabitants to walk more on a daily basis. If you trip, you risk spraining an ankle or worse, breaking something. Wearing flip flops can lead to all sorts of pain, including tendonitis.

Your toes are gripping extra hard just to keep your shoes on. That’s right. Over time this can cause unattractive problems like hammertoe, not to mention blisters!

There’s a lot of dirt out there. The flip flop doesn’t cover your foot and with each step, the back of your shoe smacks against the bottom of your foot, giving city grime plenty of chance to get on your feet and in between your toes. Your feet are exposed to bacteria, viral and fungal infections.

If you’ve read this and still need to wear your flip flops, then please, wear them in moderation and replace them often! Opt for leather versus plastic and make sure they bend slightly at the ball of the foot. Wash your feet thoroughly at night. And whatever you do, don’t drive in them – they can get caught under the brake or gas pedal.
