Clichés are clichés for a reason. Why do all of the street displays outside of New York City grocery stores in the summer have big juicy watermelons? And why do we see pictures of them everywhere at this time of the year? Because they’re delicious and watermelon is good for you! But we bet you actually have no idea just how good watermelon is for you.
Here are a few things you didn’t know about watermelon:
It’s loaded with Vitamin C and Vitamin A. Watermelon is a low-calorie treat and at just 46 calories per cup, it has 17% of your daily intake of Vitamin A and 20% of your daily intake of Vitamin C.
It’s also loaded with lycopene, beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin. These help to provide protection from lung, mouth, pancreatic, breast, prostate, endometrial and colon cancers. It has half as much sugar as an apple, and watermelon actually has more lycopene than raw tomatoes!
It has other superpowers, too. Watermelon is mostly water – it’s hydrating and can reduce inflammation and alleviate depression as well as encourage weight loss. It also is incredibly good for your digestion – it hydrates your colon to encourage easy passage of waste.
No need to go seedless or throw away the rind. Those little black seeds in the watermelon are good for you! They lower blood pressure and contain oodles of iron, zinc and protein. Juice the rind – it’s one of the highest organic sodium foods in nature and one of the best sources of chlorophyll. (Yes, humans need chlorophyll, too, to help control hunger and cravings, body odor, encourage healing, promote cleansing, protect your DNA against fried foods and up your antixodant level.)
What’s that? Where did you go? Oh, you’re racing down the street to go buy watermelon! Enjoy!
