We’ve been talking about the madness of our busy lives this month. Being busy is the New York way. But when is it healthy to be busy and when is it not?
Being busy is a great thing – it’s stimulating, challenging, and exciting. It can fuel us, feed our energy and spark creativity. Sometimes when we are going through a painful time in our lives we can take solace in being busy at work and not having to travel down the well of our negative thoughts. But when does being busy cause us to avoid dealing with problems in our lives?
Dissatisfaction with your career. If you have a demanding job, you’re busy — the days fly by and you’re hardly able to make time for the other things in your life. But if your demanding job is detrimental to your family relationships or making you unhappy and you aren’t taking steps to make a change in your life, then you are using your being busy as a means to avoid making change. Change means going through a transition period, which might be tough. Change means adjustment, and that can be uncomfortable, But if you are unhappy in your career, the change on the other side of that adjustment period will be better than what you are experiencing now.
Dissatisfaction in your closest relationships. Are you avoiding getting out of an unhealthy relationship because it will cost you time and money and you’ll be alone again? Being alone is better than being with the wrong person and a happy individual naturally has more to offer in his or her life and attracts other happy people. If you’re unhappy, there’s a chance the person on the receiving end of your unhappiness isn’t happy either. Talk about it or seek the outside help of a professional. Don’t bury yourself in being busy to avoid dealing with the person or problem.
Chasing your dream. Do you dream daily or weekly about something you want to do or accomplish? Well, if you can see it, why aren’t you taking steps to do it? Are you booking yourself with things, work and people to keep you busy so you’ll have an excuse not to do the hard work? Do you really want to be left wondering, “What if?” You can’t run from yourself – your thoughts, mind, heart or soul. Put one foot in front of the other, one step at a time. Tell a friend and ask for his or her support and to hold you accountable.
No one dies wishing he or she had worked more or been even more busy. You get one life. Make the most if it today!
