One of the most saddening effects of childhood cancer is that bright young children must, in many cases, put their lives, hobbies, and dreams on hold when they begin treatment. These kids may be aspiring young pianists, singers, writers, or painters, but cancer may prevent them from continuing with normal schooling or lessons. What’s more, the arts can be a powerful means of creative expression for those who are suffering, and for kids diagnosed with cancer, they can also provide a much needed therapeutic outlet. That’s where A Free Bird comes in. This organization, founded by Godni Amir Liteman, was created to give these young artists that outlet to continue exploring and pursuing their dreams and passions.
Friday, August 24 the organization again did just that for young aspiring chef Nicole Morreale. A Free Bird arranged for Nicole, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor when she was 7 years-old and is now cancer-free, to step into the shoes of two well-known chefs for the day in the kitchen of North End Grill. And who better to learn from than Chef Floyd Cardoz, a Bravo TV Top Chef Master and his pastry chef Alexadra Ray. After some indulgent beauty treatments to get her camera ready courtesy of hair-stylist Jose Maria and makeup artist Liteman, Nicole worked with the chefs to create her own signature Peach Ice Cream Sundae. The decadent desert was even served on the restaurant’s menu through September 3, and proceeds from its sales will benefit A Free Bird. Even actor Leonardo diCaprio saw the dessert on the menu and decided to show his own kind support of the organization!
Nicole’s own special A Free Bird experience, which was covered by Good News Planet, was made possible by North End Grill, Best Buy, Vivendi, 16th Ave Hardware, The Peppermill, Home Cooking New York, and yours truly, DASHA®. We are so pleased to be able to support the mission of A Free Bird and wish Nicole the very best as she continues to pursue her dreams of becoming a chef. We hope to dine in her own restaurant someday!
