The days are getting shorter (don’t pretend you didn’t notice) and Labor Day is just around the corner. Thankfully you’re still busting out the sunscreen, sunglasses and straw hats, but don’t think your boots won’t be calling your name from the back of the closet soon, because they will. So before you buckle down at work, before you send those kids back to school and before you decide whose house you’re going to for Thanksgiving this year, think about all the ways to nurture yourself this August!

Take advantage of the multitude of outdoor free citywide cultural events. Whether it’s outdoor movie screenings, Shakespeare in the Park (Cymbeline through August 23rd), Governor’s Island (biking, art exhibits and more), or summer concerts, there’s so much to choose from!

Hit the beach. Fire Island, the Hamptons, Jones Beach, Long Beach, and Jones Beach are all short trips and you can get there (and stay) sans your own set of wheels. Pick a borough, bike a borough. Whether you have your own bike, a Citi Bike membership, or want to rent, there is no better way to appreciate the city from a new perspective than biking! Whether you choose the Westside Highway or Central Park in Manhattan, Prospect Park and Ocean Parkway to Coney Island in Brooklyn, or any route you fancy, there are no shortage of beautiful bike paths to pedal at your own pace and enjoy feeling the wind in your face (with none of the summer humidity)! Plan an out-of-the-ordinary date. Whether it’s a date for just you, with your husband, wife, partner, boyfriend, girlfriend, family or kids, do something you’ve never done before. Is that comedy? A trip to a museum or one of the botanical gardens? A walk over the Brooklyn Bridge? Think out of your comfort zone. Better yet, if you decide to share the joy, make it a surprise for the other people involved. NYC has so much to offer, we too often forget to take advantage of the beautiful city we live in!
